Comparative Adjectives Quiz

Understanding How to Compare Things in English

For A2 learners, comparative adjectives help you compare two things. In English, we use different rules depending on how long the adjective is.

Quick Reference Rules:

Short Adjectives (1 syllable) Long Adjectives (2+ syllables)
Add -er: big → bigger Use "more": beautiful → more beautiful
Double final consonant if needed: hot → hotter Use "less" for opposite: expensive → less expensive
Change -y to -ier: happy → happier Some 2-syllable exceptions: simple → simpler
Irregular forms: good → better Always use "than": She is more careful than him
